For animals, the sense of smell is one of the most important senses to help navigate the environment. For many animals, the sense of smell is the main analyzer: it is used to find and choose food, habitat, orientation, communication with other individuals, etc. In humans, it is not so developed.
However, the sense of smell is very important for a person, it allows, for example, to distinguish the smell of food (fresh or already “smelly”). People with an impaired sense of smell are more likely to be subjected to various departures. Also, such a violation can have a negative impact on the social situation (a person may not know that an unpleasant smell comes from him), on safety (odorant is added to the gas that is carried out in many homes so that a person feels a leak), etc.
Various disorders of smell perception (increase or decrease in olfactory function, inability to recognize familiar aromas, etc.) are called dysosmia.
Complete or partial loss of the sense of smell is called anosmia. It can be congenital or acquired. It is believed that anosmia (loss of smell) is one of the first symptoms of infection with the COVID-19 coronavirus.
